Learning from the Char: Field Reflections on Livelihood Systems and Climate Adaptation in Northern Bangladesh

Abstract

This paper explores how climate adaptation interventions are experienced by people living in Bangladesh's riverine char communities. Based on exploratory fieldwork in three char communities of Gaibandha District, the study reflects on the relationship between development interventions and local livelihood systems. Drawing on Focus Group Discussions, Key Informant Interviews, direct observation, and informal conversations, the paper highlights five interconnected observations: agricultural production and livelihood security, women's livelihood aspirations and market access, livestock implementation challenges, youth aspirations beyond agriculture, and the value of observation in qualitative field research. Rather than evaluating programme success, the paper demonstrates how exploratory field observation can reveal structural issues often overlooked in conventional project evaluations and contribute to more context-sensitive climate adaptation policies.
